Black Country Saddles

Black Country Saddles was started in Walsall, the traditional home of British saddle making. Rob Cullen and John Hartley are the two master saddlers behind the company, and it still makes its own wood and metal trees in the city, and each saddle is cut, stitched and flocked with wool by hand.

We stock two Black Country models. The Poppy is a general purpose saddle in smaller seat sizes, from 14 to 15.5 inches, which suits ponies and younger riders. The Working Hunter is cut to show off the horse's front in the ring while still giving you security over a fence, and comes in seat sizes from 14 to 17 inches. Both come in medium wide, wide and extra wide fittings, in havana or dark havana leather.

Philip Ireland, our Society of Master Saddlers qualified fitter, can assess your horse in our arena and advise on the right model and fitting before you buy. Book a saddle fitting, or browse our full range of saddles.

Black Country Saddles FAQs

Where are Black Country saddles made?

Black Country saddles are made in the West Midlands. The trees are made in Walsall, and the saddles are cut, stitched and flocked by hand.

Are Black Country saddles handmade?

Yes. Each saddle is made by hand, with wool flocking in the panels and a tree the company makes itself.

What types of saddle does Black Country make?

Black Country makes dressage, jumping, general purpose and showing saddles, with a choice of seat size, tree width and panel on many models.

What's the difference between a made-to-order and an off-the-shelf saddle?

A made-to-order saddle is built to the seat size, tree width and panel chosen for your horse and you. An off-the-shelf saddle comes in standard sizes, so a fitter has less room to adjust it to an unusual shape.

Why are Black Country saddles flocked with wool?

Wool flocking can be adjusted by a qualified saddler, so the panels can be altered as your horse's shape changes rather than replacing the saddle.

Can you fit a Black Country saddle to my horse?

Yes. Philip Ireland, our Society of Master Saddlers qualified fitter, fits saddles on site in our own arena. Call 01823 481484 to book.
